This Chrome Extension Makes Netflix Look Like a Conference Call

Sometimes you want to watch Netflix, but need that watching to be on the discrete side. Or instance, maybe it would help if your computer’s screen looked like you were on a conference call talking to people in another office rather than watch The Office. Netflix Hangouts is a Chrome extension that does just that. Once installed, the extension loads up what looks to be a conference call with three colleagues, the fourth being whatever it is you want to watch on Netflix. The sales pitch from the extension’s creators is…

Our editors review and recommend products to help you buy the stuff you need. If you make a purchase by clicking one of our links, we may earn a small share of the revenue. However, our picks and opinions are independent from USA Today’s newsroom and any business incentives. There’s something about wearing noise-canceling headphones that adds an air of superiority. Once you put them, you’re saying “Don’t talk to me,” which is ideal for long train commutes or crowded flights. And not to sound like an elitist, but listening…

Everything new coming to Netflix this week, and everything leaving (week of July 21)

The month of major Netflix originals continues this week as Orange is the New Black returns for its seventh and final season. The prison dramedy helped put Netflix on the map way back in 2013 as a genuine player in the increasingly crowded TV landscape, and it’s incredible to think just how prolific the service has become since. The other highlight of the week is the addition of Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, which remains one of the best movies from the latter half of his career. Plus, its arrival on…

Southwest is giving away a Nintendo Switch to one lucky passenger every day for a month

Southwest Airlines kicked off its new Lets Play Getaway sweepstakes in a pretty dramatic fashion. The deal is, every day through Aug. 13 the Dallas-based air carrier will be giving away a Nintendo Switch as well as a digital copy of Super Mario Maker 2. That’s certainly a sweet enough promotion, but if you happened to be a passenger on Southwest flight 2246 Wednesday from Dallas to San Diego, you actually already scored both of those freebies. The carrier decided to gift those to every passenger on the flight, partly…

‘Fortnite’ is branching out into original video programming

In a letter to shareholders earlier this year, Netflix acknowledged what might have seemed at the time like a surprising fact: “We compete with (and lose to) Fortnite more than HBO,” the streaming video giant admitted. So much of the commentary around Netflix tends to pit it against the obvious rivals — HBO, other streamers, TV in general, and so on. But not only does a game like Fortnite eat away at a growing share of users’ time that might otherwise be spent on something like bingeing Netflix content. It…

YouTube cracks down on stream-ripping sites that pirate music

YouTube has caught the attention of a high-level congressional office interested in its copyright-protection practices, an inquiry that comes as the massive video site cracks down on stream ripping, a type of music piracy. Stream ripping swipes audio tracks off YouTube videos and spits them out as MP3 downloads. The office of the House Judiciary Committee chairman, Rep. Jerrold Nadler of New York, reached out to Google late last week about YouTube’s actions on stream ripping because of his longstanding interest in quashing piracy, according to a person familiar with…

Apple starts to roll out support to play 100,000 radio stations with Siri on iPhone and HomePod

As announced at WWDC, Apple is bringing live radio stations from several online providers for Siri users on iPhone, iPad and HomePod. Although marketed as a fall iOS 13 feature, Siri live radio is already partly working on the HomePod, and for iPhones and iPads running the iOS 13 beta. Apple said that it will be sourcing from TuneIn, iHeartRadio and Radio.com — touting a total figure above 100,00 stations. This should mean there is a decent selection of top stations available to play. It’s not clear if all integrations…

What Netflix Does — And Doesn’t — Do With Your Data

There’s no doubt Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) has a lot of viewer data. With 150 million global subscribers streaming video a couple hours every day, how could it not? But contrary to what many believe, Netflix isn’t harvesting data to make content green-light decisions. “The data doesn’t help you on anything in that process,” Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said at Series Fest. “Picking content and working with the creative community is a very human function.” That said, Netflix’s data is still extremely valuable to the company. It once published a research…
