This will be the fifth year that the giant online retail giant is hosting its annual Prime member-only sale. It’s basically become the Black Friday of the summer and is chock-full of incredible products at some of their lowest prices. Each year since Amazon first announced the shopping event in 2015, the sales on Prime Day get bigger and better, so we’re pretty excited about what this year’s event will bring.

When is Amazon Prime Day?

Even though Amazon hasn’t announced the exact date of the shopping “holiday,” and typically doesn’t make it official until late June, we have a pretty good guess based on what Amazon has done in previous years. We expect Prime Day 2019 to fall on the second or third week of July and last at least 36 hours.

Last year, Amazon Prime Day began July 16 at noon and lasted for 36 hours. It was a little later in the month than years past, and many including us have guessed this was because the World Cup ran into mid July. We’re not certain if Amazon will stick to the mid-month schedule this year or go back to holding their event on the second week of the month, as it fell on July 10 and 11 in 2017 and July 12 in 2016. But we are confident that this year’s Prime Day will most likely take place around either July 9 or July 16 this year and last just as long—if not longer.

What kind of deals can you expect?

While we haven’t gotten word of any deals (yet), there are a few products that we can pretty much guarantee will be on sale. The biggest discounts have typically always been and will continue to be on Amazon products like Echos, Kindles, Fire Tablets, and Ring Doorbells during Prime Day. There will also more than likely be discounts on Amazon services like Kindle Unlimited and Amazon Music as well as special offers in-store at Whole Foods for those with Prime memberships, too.

We’re also quite confident there will be plenty of impressive deals on popular cooking products like 4K TVs, headphones, vacuums, DNA test kits, the coveted Instant Pot, and much more.

What were the best Prime Day deals last year?

Prime Day 2018 was arguably the best Prime Day so far, and there were some seriously impressive deals. The best, by far, wound up being the Instant Pot, which was marked down to $58.99, a whopping $0.50 cheaper than its Black Friday price. It’s typically $100 and has been on sale for the past few months, fluctuating between $60-$80. We wouldn’t be surprised if this is the year the Instant Pot reaches $50 on Prime Day.

Other top sellers from Prime Day 2018:

  • Amazon Fire TV Stick (1st-gen.)—marked down to $20 from $40 (no longer available)
  • 23andMe DNA Test Kit—$99 down from $149
  • Philips Sonicare Diamond Clean Electric Toothbrush—$100, down from $200
  • Amazon Music Unlimited—$0.99 for 4 months for new subscribers (typically $8-$10/month with 1 month free)
  • Crest 3D Whitestrips—$28, down from over $50

How do I prepare for Prime Day?

The best thing you can do before Prime Day is to make sure you have a Prime membership—you literally can’t access the hundreds of deals otherwise! The membership costs nearly $119 for a yearly subscription or $12.99 for a monthly subscription. But there are plenty of benefits to having a Prime membership other than Prime Day (i.e. free two-day shipping, Whole Foods discounts, Prime Video), so you might want to consider getting one anyway. And if you’ve never tried Prime before, you can always sign up for the free 30-day trial right before Prime Day and cancel it before you get charged to shop the sale guilt-free. We won’t tell.

To prepare yourself to sift through the plethora of deals that will be available, your best bet is to make a list of the items you want and need. We also recommend getting the Amazon app and creating a Prime Day wish list so you can get push notifications when any of the items you want go on sale.

Will other retailers have sales too?

Prime Day may be an Amazon “holiday,” but their success has led other retailers to hold their own sales around the same time. Most refer to their savings opportunities as Black Friday in July and others hold their own annual events, like Nordstrom’s massive Anniversary sale.

Last year, we saw big sales from all sorts of retailers, some expected and some surprising. Best Buy had a “Big Deals” day and eBay ran special deals and even offered price matching. Lots of apparel sites had huge sales too, from J.Crew and Levi’s to Nordstrom Rack and Express.

This year, we can only imagine there will be more, bigger, and better sales as retailers try to outdo one another and compete with Prime Day for our attention. The good news is all the competition means more ways for us to save on things we love, and our team of online shopping experts is going to be keeping a watchful eye on every sale to help you find only the diamonds in the rough.

We’ll continue to update this post once we get more news about dates, deals and everything else, so check back for the latest information.
