In healthcare these days, ‘There’s an app for that’… unless you really need it

When a digital health company announces a new app, everyone seems to think it’s going to improve health. Not me. Where I work, in San Francisco’s public health system, in a hospital named after the founder of Facebook, digital solutions promising to improve health feel far away. The patients and providers in our public delivery system are deeply familiar with the real-world barriers to leveraging technology to improve health. Our patients are low-income (nearly all of them receive public insurance) and diverse (more than 140 languages are spoken). Many of…

This Chrome Extension Makes Netflix Look Like a Conference Call

Sometimes you want to watch Netflix, but need that watching to be on the discrete side. Or instance, maybe it would help if your computer’s screen looked like you were on a conference call talking to people in another office rather than watch The Office. Netflix Hangouts is a Chrome extension that does just that. Once installed, the extension loads up what looks to be a conference call with three colleagues, the fourth being whatever it is you want to watch on Netflix. Uninstall These Eight Browser Extensions That Stole Data from Millions

A massive data leak was recently discovered by cybersecurity researcher Sam Jidali, revealing private information for 45 major companies and millions of individuals. Dubbed “DataSpii” by Jidali and his team, the leak was perpetrated by innocent-looking Chrome and Firefox browser extensions that collected and distributed users’ browsing data—URLs that revealed private information about users and a long list of companies, including Apple, Walmart, Amazon, 23AndMe, SpaceX, Skype, and many more. (The full list is included in Jidali’s report.) The eight extensions used to carry out the leak are: Branded Surveys…

More store closings coming: An estimated 12,000 shops could close by the end of 2019

Six months into 2019, there have already been 20% more store closings announced than in all of 2018, according to a new report from global marketing research firm Coresight Research. Based on Coresight Research’s figures and retailers’ earnings reports, more than 7,000 stores are slated to shutter this year with thousands of locations already gone. Bankrupt footwear company Payless ShoeSource, which closed its remaining U.S. stores last week, accounts for about 37% of the closings. The “going-out-of-business” sales and liquidation of other brands is expected to continue. Coresight estimates closures…

Everything new coming to Netflix this week, and everything leaving (week of July 21)

The month of major Netflix originals continues this week as Orange is the New Black returns for its seventh and final season. The other highlight of the week is the addition of Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, which remains one of the best movies from the latter half of his career. Plus, its arrival on…

How Much Do Planes Actually Get Cleaned in Between Flights?

It’s usually best, in any situation where you end up with your finger touching your eye or grazing your lips, to not think of where it’s been. That goes double when taking any form of public transit, where your hands touch the places all the other hands of people who are just as gross as you have touched (relax, it’s fine, take it from a New Yorker: constant exposure to germs make you indestructible). So should we triple this advice when taking air travel? It’s a notoriously unpleasant experience that…
